DATA ANALYSIS METHODS
On completion of this module, participants will be able to select the most appropriate method for analysis of data i.e. to enable participants to utilise basic tools and techniques to assess data in their environment and to convert that data into information to support daily decision-making in their role as Director / Senior Manager or Manager / Professional / Skilled.
Introduction: Fundamental tools to support data analysis - a comprehensive introduction with an opportunity to apply principles in a tutor led exercise. Central Tendency - a first order assessment of any given data set. Key elements are the:
Paper based exercise to practice these basic calculations (based on relevant work based examples).
Data Variability - a more rigorous investigation of trends and tendencies in any given number / data set.
- Standard Deviation
Paper based exercise to practice these simple calculations (based on relevant work based examples).
- Samples Size - how to determine the appropriate sample size to arrive at the
required confidence level for the decision under consideration.
Check Sheets - a manual method which helps add structure to unstructured data.
- Frequency Tables - a manual method of determining frequency of occurrence
of certain data in a data set.
A series of practical, team based, work relevant problems which will allow the participants to apply the tools under consideration to quantitatively assess data applicable to day to day operations.
- Statistical Data Analysis - Not all data can be assessed. This section will
facilitate sample based decision making where the entire data set is not available
for analysis or is not appropriate to analyse.
In this section we will be focussing in particular on a well established set of tools to include Pareto, Run Charts, Histogram, Control Charts and Regression.
This section will ensure that the participant is aware of the best technique to select for data analysis in particular circumstances.
